International peace advocate and social activist Dr K A Paul has ignited nationwide debate by criticizing Indian political leadership over what he describes as disproportionate attention and resources directed toward foreign sports icons, notably Argentine football star Lionel Messi, at the expense of domestic athletes and youth development.

In a video statement that has gone viral, Dr Paul raised concerns about the political and financial arrangements surrounding Messi’s India visit. He alleged that Indian sportspeople and students are being overlooked while extensive resources are allocated for foreign athletes, calling the situation “a significant national misstep.”

Dr Paul specifically mentioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s special flight to meet Messi in Hyderabad and questioned the West Bengal government’s plan to erect an 18-crore statue in the footballer’s honor. He also targeted Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, accusing him of prioritizing foreign sports stars over fulfilling commitments to education and youth programs.

“Why are hundreds of crores being spent on glorifying one foreign footballer when our own players lack basic facilities?” Dr Paul asked. He emphasized that India must invest strategically in its athletes to remain competitive internationally, citing China, Russia, and the United States as examples of nations that achieve Olympic success through strong infrastructure and talent development.

Dr Paul further criticized the practice of erecting statues for foreign players, suggesting that such honours should be reserved for national icons like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr B R Ambedkar, or Mother Teresa. He described the political fanfare surrounding Messi’s visit as excessive, adding that “Indian politicians have lowered their standards by treating a sports celebrity like a deity.”

Recalling his own experience, Dr Paul highlighted hosting international sports figures such as Evander Holyfield and Mahesh Bhupathi in India during the 1990s, stating that the events aimed to inspire youth rather than divert public funds or political attention from local priorities.

He also questioned “fake agreements” and unfulfilled financial commitments to institutions such as Osmania University, warning that such practices undermine public trust and national development. “Where is the promised money? Has it actually been transferred?” he asked.

Concluding his statement, Dr K A Paul called for systemic reforms and urged citizens to hold leaders accountable. “Our focus must be on our athletes, our youth, and our future. Change is necessary, and together we can make it happen,” he said, encouraging people to widely share his message.
