ARM Opens New Bengaluru Office to Develop 2nm Chips for AI, Drones, and Smartphones: Ashwini Vaishnaw

New facility to boost India’s semiconductor mission, focusing on advanced chip design, innovation, and global market leadership.

New Delhi, September 17, 2025:

Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Tuesday inaugurated the new office of semiconductor design giant ARM in Bengaluru. The facility will focus on developing cutting-edge 2nm chips for AI servers, drones, and mobile phones, marking a major step forward in India’s semiconductor ambitions.

Speaking at the launch, Vaishnaw said the move reflects the government’s vision to make India a global hub for semiconductor design and manufacturing. He noted that the Indian electronics industry, now valued at ₹11.5 lakh crore, has grown six times in manufacturing and eight times in exports over the past 11 years. Electronics, he stressed, are fast emerging as one of India’s largest export sectors.

The minister also outlined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 20-year roadmap for the semiconductor sector, aimed at creating opportunities for youth and engineers while meeting the rising global demand for chips. He highlighted that 278 institutions and universities are engaged in innovation, with 28 student-designed chips already taped out.

The event further showcased India’s progress in building a semiconductor ecosystem, with Carborundum Universal Ltd (CUMI) presenting high-precision materials used in chipmaking. As the first phase of India’s Semiconductor Mission concludes, the second phase will prioritize domestic production of equipment and materials, aligning with the trillion-dollar global semiconductor market.
