Bringing Mizoram on the Track of Tomorrow

To ride the stride of tomorrow—reliably, progressively, and perfectly—a proper track is needed. As time takes a new turn every now and then, mankind, society, and the nation also need a proper path to progress, to prosper, to embrace hope, and to taste prosperity.

Taming the hilly terrain of Mizoram in terms of connectivity was quite a challenge. But as the lifeline of the nation, Indian Railways had to reach the Land of Blue Mountains—and this is how the Bairabi–Sairang railway line was envisaged, planned, and now completed.

This was all made possible because of the powerful inspiration, motivation, and encouragement under the visionary, development-oriented guidance of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Through the Central Government’s Act East Policy, the beautiful North-Eastern state of Mizoram—long deprived of railway service due to its difficult geographical conditions and challenging hilly terrain—has now been gifted with the Bairabi–Sairang Rail Line, providing railway connectivity straight up to the state’s capital- Aizawl.

Bringing Mizoram on the Track of Tomorrow

The aforesaid rail line will not only bring ease and convenience to inter-state travel for locals, but also serve the purpose of intrastate and cross-border movement, imperative for the socio-economic development of the region and the nation at large.

Constructed at a cost of around ₹8,071 crore, the total length of the line is about 51.38 km, with 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, 5 road overbridges, and 6 road underbridges along the route. Among these, Bridge No. 196 stands at a height of 114 meters—an impressive 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar.

The tunnels en route are not just lifeless structures of cement and mortar; they come alive with adornments of local artworks reflecting Mizo heritage and cultural legacy.  Passenger amenities and conveniences have adequately been taken into account at the stations.

The statistics elaborated above are nothing short of an outstanding engineering marvel. The entire team, involved right from conceptualization to construction, deserves kudos for giving shape to this long-cherished dream of connecting this beautiful state with the rest of India.

The benefits of this rail link will, of course, be multidimensional. Besides making travel easier, it will lead to credible socio-economic development, boosting tourism and other trade sectors—not only in Mizoram but across the other North-Eastern states as well.

Upgradation of rail infrastructure and expansion of rail connectivity have always been the focus of Indian Railways. Similar to the iconic Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link Project, this is the next milestone in connecting uncharted paths and linking unconnected regions of India.

Non-stop Indian Railways… Non-stop connectivity and infrastructure development!
