PM Modi Inaugurates ₹9,000 Crore Development Projects in Aizawl, Connects Mizoram to India’s Railway Map

From rail and road connectivity to youth empowerment, GST reforms, and cultural pride, the initiatives mark a new chapter of growth, integration, and opportunity for Mizoram and the North East.

Aizawl, Mizoram, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone and inaugurated development projects worth over ₹9,000 crore in Aizawl, Mizoram, via videoconferencing, marking a transformative milestone for the state. These initiatives, spanning Railways, Roadways, Energy, and Sports, signal a new era of connectivity and growth, with Aizawl now officially part of India’s railway network. Unable to attend in person due to adverse weather at Lengpui Airport, the Prime Minister conveyed his deep connection with Mizoram’s people, saying, “I can feel the love and affection of the people even through this medium.”

A Lifeline of Transformation: Mizoram’s Railway Revolution

PM Modi emphasized that “this is not merely a railway connection, but a life-line of transformation and it will revolutionize the lives and livelihoods of the people of Mizoram.” The inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang rail line, a project whose foundation stone he laid years ago, overcomes challenging terrain to connect Aizawl to India’s railway map. He commended the engineers and workers for their dedication in making this dream a reality. The Prime Minister announced that Sairang will now be linked to Delhi via the Rajdhani Express, creating unprecedented opportunities for farmers, businesses, and citizens to access larger markets, education, and healthcare. This connectivity is expected to spur employment in tourism, transport, and hospitality, transforming Mizoram’s economic landscape.

North East: The Growth Engine of India

Describing the North East as India’s growth engine, PM Modi contrasted the government’s inclusive approach with past neglect due to vote-bank politics. Over the past 11 years, significant strides have been made in rail, road, air, and digital connectivity across the region. Mizoram will soon benefit from helicopter services under the UDAN scheme, enhancing access to remote areas. The Prime Minister highlighted Mizoram’s pivotal role in India’s Act East Policy and the North East Economic Corridor, with projects like the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the Sairang–Hmawngbuchhuah rail line linking the state to the Bay of Bengal and South East Asia, boosting trade and tourism.

Empowering Youth and Sports

Mizoram’s talented youth and sporting legacy were key focuses of the Prime Minister’s address. With 11 Eklavya Residential Schools already operational and six more underway, the government is prioritizing education for tribal communities. The North East’s emergence as a start-up hub, with 4,500 start-ups and 25 incubators, includes active participation from Mizoram’s youth. In sports, the Khelo India scheme and the new National Sports Policy—Khelo India Khel Niti—are creating modern infrastructure and opportunities, aligning with Mizoram’s tradition of producing champions in football and other disciplines.

NextGen GST Reforms: Enhancing Affordability

The Prime Minister outlined the NextGen GST reforms, which have slashed taxes on essentials like toothpaste, soap, and oil from 27% to 5%, making daily life more affordable. Medicines, test kits, and insurance are now more accessible, with further reductions on cancer medicines and construction materials like cement effective after September 22, 2025. A 5% GST on most hotels is set to boost tourism in Mizoram and the North East, encouraging travel and exploration during the festive season.

Cultural and Economic Pride

PM Modi celebrated Mizoram’s cultural and economic contributions, from bamboo products to organic ginger, turmeric, and bananas, amplified by the Vocal for Local initiative. Events like the Ashta Lakshmi Festival and the Rising North East Summit have showcased the region’s textiles, crafts, and tourism potential, attracting significant investments.

India’s Economic and Security

Milestones

With a 7.8% growth rate in the first quarter of 2025–26, India remains the fastest-growing major economy, driven by Make In India and robust exports. Citing Operation Sindoor, PM Modi praised the armed forces and the role of Made-In-India weapons in strengthening national security.

A Vision for Inclusive Growth

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering every citizen and region, with Mizoram playing a vital role in India’s development journey. He extended congratulations for Aizawl’s integration into the railway network and expressed hope for a future visit. The event was attended by Mizoram Governor General V K Singh, Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma, and Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, marking a defining moment for Mizoram’s progress.
