India and Bhutan are strengthening their bilateral relationship through two significant rail connectivity projects aimed at enhancing cross-border trade, movement of people, and economic opportunities. The Kokrajhar (India) to Gelephu (Bhutan) New Line and the Banarhat (India) to Samtse (Bhutan) New Line, with a combined investment of ₹4,033 crore, mark a historic step toward establishing the first rail links in Bhutan. These projects are poised to transform regional connectivity, facilitate Bhutan’s international trade through Indian ports, and support the economic development of key Bhutanese hubs like Gelephu and Samtse, which serve as critical nodes along the 700-km India-Bhutan border.

The Kokrajhar-Gelephu New Line, spanning 69 km, is a ₹3,456 crore initiative connecting Assam’s Kokrajhar and Chirang districts with Bhutan’s Sarpang district. This rail line will feature six stations, two major bridges, 29 minor bridges, two viaducts, one road overbridge (ROB), 39 road underbridges (RUBs), and two goods sheds. With a construction timeline of four years, the project is expected to significantly boost the movement of goods and people, creating better economic and employment opportunities for the region. Gelephu, a key focus of this project, is being developed as a “Mindfulness City” by the Bhutanese government, emphasizing sustainable urban growth. This rail link will enhance access to this emerging economic center, fostering stronger trade and cultural ties between the two nations.

The Banarhat-Samtse New Line, with an investment of ₹577 crore, stretches 20 km, connecting West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district with Bhutan’s Samtse district. The project includes two stations, one major bridge, 24 minor bridges, one ROB, and 37 RUBs, with construction expected to be completed in three years. Samtse, an important industrial town in Bhutan, stands to benefit significantly from this rail link, which will streamline the movement of goods and people, supporting Bhutan’s growing industrial and trade activities. As India remains Bhutan’s largest trading partner, these rail projects will further strengthen the economic partnership by improving access to Indian ports, which are vital for Bhutan’s international trade.

These rail connectivity initiatives underscore India’s commitment to supporting Bhutan’s economic development by enhancing infrastructure links to its key economic centers.
