Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Unveils TDK’s Cutting-Edge Lithium-Ion Battery Facility in Sohna, Haryana.

Advancing India’s Self-Reliance Mission Sohna, Haryana

September 4, 2025

Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw today inaugurated TDK Corporation’s advanced lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery manufacturing plant in Sohna, Haryana, marking a transformative moment in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in electronics production. The state-of-the-art facility is a key step toward fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, reinforcing India’s ambition to become a global leader in electronics manufacturing.

Speaking at the inauguration, Shri Vaishnaw emphasized the significance of this milestone in strengthening India’s electronics ecosystem. “From camera modules to PCB assemblies, semiconductors, and now batteries, we are steadily building the capacity to produce every critical component domestically,” he said. “This plant represents the arrival of world-class technology in India, a testament to our commitment to self-reliance and innovation.” He also highlighted the recent unveiling of India’s first domestically produced chips at Semicon India 2025, noting the rapid strides the country is making in this sector.

The Sohna facility is designed to produce 200 million battery packs annually, meeting approximately 40 percent of India’s yearly demand of 500 million packs. These batteries will power a wide range of devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, earbuds, AirPods, and laptops. With significant potential for future expansion, the plant is poised to bolster India’s role in the global electronics supply chain. The project, established under the government’s Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) Scheme, reflects India’s strategic efforts to attract high-tech investments and foster domestic production.

In addition to its technological contributions, the plant is expected to create around 5,000 direct jobs, with employees having received specialized training at TDK’s AT Bawal facility to ensure top-tier expertise. Shri Vaishnaw extended his appreciation to the Haryana government for its crucial support in enabling the establishment of such advanced manufacturing units in the state, which has been instrumental in driving this initiative forward.

The launch of the TDK plant underscores India’s steady progress toward becoming a global hub for electronics manufacturing. By focusing on critical components like semiconductors, batteries, and PCB assemblies, the country is reducing its dependence on imports while enhancing its economic and technological resilience. This development not only addresses domestic needs but also positions India as a trusted partner in the international electronics market. As the nation continues to attract cutting-edge investments, the Sohna facility stands as a powerful symbol of India’s growing prowess in innovation and self-sufficiency.
